George R. Marino

July 10, 1932 ~ November 22, 2015 (age 83) 83 Years Old

George Robert Marino, 83, of Milford, Massachusetts, died at home on Sunday, November 22, 2015. George was the beloved husband of the late Susan Ellen Marino, nee Davoren.

George was born in Milford, Massachusetts and was the son of the late Joseph “Nap” Marino and the late Mary Marino, nee Butchok. He was called Bobbie by his parents, and three sisters, Joan, Carole, and Claire. George was raised on Cedar Street, in the Plains neighborhood of Milford, a section of the town where many Italian Americans settled in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. George graduated from Milford High School in1949.

Through grade school and high school, George worked at and managed his uncle’s grocery store and service station next to Waushakum Lake in Framingham, Massachusetts.  George was drafted into the Army during the Korean War, and as good fortune would have it was deployed to Innsbruck, Austria, where he served for two years as a medic in the Alpine combat ski patrol. While on the ski patrol, George participated courageously in many mountain rescues and also found time to enjoy the lovely city of Salzburg. Following military service, and with the support of the G.I. Bill, George attended the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1959. As a young pharmacist George was employed at Professional Pharmacy, in Framingham. He later co-owned and operated Davoren’s Pharmacy, formerly owned by Thomas Davoren.  Davoren’s Pharmacy was a Milford landmark that served the community for over sixty years.

George served as a Trustee of the former Milford Savings Bank. He was appointed to, and served for many years on the board of directors of the Milford National Bank & Trust Company. George was a life time member of the No Name Club, whose members included friends he grew up with from the Plains neighborhood, and whom he remained close to throughout his life.  In 2014, George was named Plains Man of the Year. George was a Rotarian, and helped organize summer swimming lessons for children at the Milford Fino Field Pool.

George enjoyed jazz, big band and classical music, and played the accordion and piano well. He often brought his family to concerts at Symphony Hall in Boston and Tangelwood, and in 2015 hosted a family outing to the Newport Jazz festival.  George took his wife Susan and family on wonderful vacations including trips to California, Florida, Bermuda and Italy. George was a lover of philosophy and nature, often taking long walks in the woods around Milford, and hikes throughout New Hampshire and Cape Cod.  He enjoyed boating and fishing on Nantucket Sound and was a member of the Massachusetts Audubon Society.  Throughout his life, George supported liberal and humanitarian causes, always defending the poor and the underdog. Above all, George was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, and spent his happiest years with his wife Susan.

George is survived by his 7 Children: Christopher George Marino of Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Joseph Thomas Marino and his wife Kathie, nee Lyons of Whitman Massachusetts, Thomas Robert Marino and his wife Suzanne, nee Laurie of Foxboro Massachusetts, Rachel Susanne, wife of Greg LaDestro of Newtown Connecticut, George “Nappy” Marino and his wife Wendy, nee Thayer of Milford Massachusetts, Susanne Esther, wife of John McShane of Hopedale Massachusetts, and Robert Charles Marino and his wife Kim, nee Ferreira of Portsmouth New Hampshire; 12 Grandchildren: Edward Marino, James Marino, Kayleigh Marino, Jack Marino, Gregory LaDestro, Lucas LaDestro, Ally LaDestro, Michael Marino, Abby Marino, John McShane, Brendan McShane and Anna McShane; 2 Sisters: Joan McGuire of Ft.
