Mr. Jose B. Gocalves, 71, of Milford MA died unexpectedly on Friday (March 22, 2024) at the Milford Regional Medical Center after being stricken at home. He was the beloved husband of Maria (Nascimento) Goncalves.
Jose was born in Donoes Portugal, the son of the late Joao Goncalves and the late Maria (Pinto) Barroso. He attended public schools in Portugal as a young boy, graduating from high school.
Jose had been a resident of Milford MA since 1976. He was first employed as a young man in the construction industry. He later was employed for many years as an assembler, working at the General Motors assembly plant located in Linden NJ. After retiring from General Motors he worked in the masonry business.
Jose was a longtime active member of the Portuguese Club in Milford, volunteering for many of the club’s programs and also had served as Club President from 2010 to 2023. As a member of the Portuguese Club he enjoyed playing bocce ball & playing cards.
Jose also enjoyed traveling back to Portugal to celebrate his heritage. He loved to make his own wine and was an avid gardener. He was constantly staging family activities and kept busy with many home projects. He enjoyed helping out his family members & many friends with their various projects.
Jose was also an avid soccer fan and thoroughly enjoyed watching the Portuguese Soccer League, as well as the World Cup.
Along with his beloved wife of 47 years, he is survived by his 2 sons: Jose “Joe” Gocalves Jr. and his wife Theresa of Milford MA & Moses Goncalves of Milford MA; his 5 siblings: Virginia Moura of Bridgeport CT, Rosa Pinto Carneiro and her husband Antonio Carneiro of Milford MA, Fatima Fernandes and her husband Joao Fernandes of France, Gloria Costa and her husband Jose Costa of Lisbon Portugal & Sao Gil and her husband Jose Gil of France; also many nieces, nephews & cousins.
Jose was the brother of the late Maria Texeira; the late Antonio Pinto do Rego; and the late Albino Pinto do Rego.
His funeral will be held Wednesday (March 27th) from the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress Street, Milford MA followed b y a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 NOON in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 19 Winter Street, Milford MA. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Milford MA. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday (March 27th) from 9:30am to 11:30am at the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress Street, Milford MA, prior to his Funeral Mass.
