Louis Varrichione Jr. Obituary

Mr. Louis Varrichione Jr., 84, of Milford MA, died Friday (September 13, 2019) at his residence after an illness. He was the beloved husband of Leona A. (Archambault) Varrichione.

 

Mr. Varrichione was born in Framingham MA, the son of the late Louis and the late Louise F. (Varrichione) Varrichione. He was a graduate of Natick High School, Class of 1954 and a graduate of UMASS-Amherst, Class of 1960. He was an accomplished football player while attending UMASS-Amherst , receiving varsity football letters in 1955, 1957 & 1958. He was also named Football All-Yankee Conference honors in 1957 & 1958. He later obtained his master’s degree in education from UMASS-Amherst in 1968. He also attended various National Science Foundation courses during his teaching career.

 

Mr. Varrichione began his teaching career at Maynard Junior High School from 1960 to 1968. He then taught science at Ashland High School from 1968 until his retirement in 1997.

 

Mr. Varrichione also had a long and successful career as an athletics coach, beginning in 1959 when he served as a Freshmen football coach while attending UMASS-Amherst. In 1962 he was appointed head football coach at Maynard Junior High School, where he served until 1964. Then from 1965 to 1968 he was an assistant football coach at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood MA. From 1969 to 1972 he served as head football coach, wrestling coach and track & field coach at Ashland High School.

 

Mr. Varrichione continued his coaching career from 1973 to 1977 serving as an assistant football coach at Milford High School, during which time the Scarlet Hawks were the 1975 Super Bowl champions. From 1978 to 1981 he served as the offensive line coach at Framingham State College and from 1982 to 1993 he served as assistant offensive line coach at Harvard University, during which time they were Ivy League Champions in 1982. From 1994 to 1999 he served as assistant football coach at Worcester State College, during which time the team went undefeated and were league champions in 1996.

 

From 2000 to 2005 he served as assistant football coach at Dean Junior College and from 2006 to 2009 he returned to Worcester State College as an assistant football coach. From 2010 to 2014 he returned to Dean Junior College as an assistant football coach. In 2015, his final year of coaching, he served as an assistant football coach at Worcester State College once again and was awarded his Fifty Year Coaching Plaque by Coach Brien Cullen.

 

Mr. Varrichione was also inducted into the M.I.W.A. Hall of Fame in 1986 for outstanding coaching & contributions to Massachusetts wrestling.

 

From an early age he was an avid sportsman, interested in all sports. During his coaching career he also served as an official timer at various sporting events and as a baseball umpire. In his retirement years he also became an avid golfer.

 

Along with his beloved wife, he is survived by his five children: Virginia A., wife of Dean Barham of Merrimack NH, Nancy L., wife of Glenn Herrick formerly of Maynard MA and presently of Dripping Springs TX, Louis Varrichione IV, and his wife Gina of Bristol RI, Susan C., wife of Daniel Bonner formerly of Northboro MA and presently of Dripping Springs TX, Daniel L. Varrichione and his wife Christina Ferrari of Eastport NY;               20 grandchildren: SGT. Alexander Barham (USMC Ret.), Rachel, wife of Landon Rogers, Rebecca Barham, Gabriella, wife of Peter Yee, Jessica Herrick, Robert Herrick, Meghan Herrick, Joseph Herrick, Jessica Varrichione, Louis Varrichione V., 2nd LT. Nicholas Varrichione (US Army), Sarah Varrichione, Krista Varrichione, 1st Lt. Caitlin Spletzer (USAF), wife of 1st LT. Joseph Spletzer (USAF), Alexandra Bonner, Shannon Bonner, Olivia Bonner, Devon Varrichione, Suzanna Varrichione and Bennet Varrichione; 3 great grandchildren: Brayden Herrick, Avila Rogers and Holden Rogers; 1 brother: Edward Varrichione of Florida; 1 sister: Grace, wife of John Andronica of Winston-Salem NC; also several nieces & nephews.

 

Mr. Varrichione was the brother of the late Robert Varrichione, the late Richard Varrichione and the late Carol Varrichione.

 

His funeral will be held Friday (September 20th) at 11am from the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress Street, Milford MA followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12NOON in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 19 Winter Street, Milford MA. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Milford MA. Visiting hours will be held Thursday (September 19th) from 5pm to 8pm.
