Obituary

M. Claire (Mercier) Finigan, 90, of Hopedale, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, following a period of declining health. She was the beloved wife of the late Burton B. Finigan, who passed away in 2002.

Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, Claire was the daughter of the late Donat and Lea (Berube) Mercier. Throughout her life, she called several New England communities home, including Westport, Massachusetts, East Providence, Rhode Island, and Hopedale, Massachusetts.

Claire worked for many years as an office manager at Reliance Electric. Organized, practical, and remarkably sharp when it came to finances, she had a good head for business and a keen eye for getting the most for her money—a talent that went hand in hand with her love of finding a great bargain.

Claire had a wonderful sense of style and took pride in looking her best. She knew what she liked, was comfortable sharing her opinions, and brought a strong and independent spirit to everything she did.

She loved to entertain and had a special gift for bringing people together. Family and friendships were meant to be enjoyed and celebrated, and over the years Claire delighted in gathering those she loved for shared experiences and trips, including many memorable times on Cape Cod and in Florida. Whether entertaining in her home, planning a getaway, or simply enjoying time together, Claire understood the importance of staying connected and making memories.

An avid reader, Claire also enjoyed exercising at the Hopedale Senior Center and treasured time spent by the ocean, a lifelong source of happiness for her.

Her faith and community were important parts of her life as well. Claire was a longtime communicant and active member of Sacred Heart Church in Hopedale and served as vice president of the Laurelwood Condominium Association.

Above all, Claire cherished her family and the relationships she built throughout her life. Her nieces and nephews held a particularly special place in her heart, as did her many cousins with whom she shared lifelong family ties, gatherings, travels, and memories. Claire was thoughtful about keeping in touch and had a special way of remembering the people she loved, always making an effort to acknowledge birthdays and special occasions.

Those who knew Claire will remember a woman who was independent and spirited, enjoyed the company of others, appreciated a good bargain, had a wonderful sense of style, and wasn't afraid to tell you what she thought. She loved bringing people together and creating opportunities to share time, laughter, and new experiences. Most of all, Claire will be remembered for the people she loved, the relationships she nurtured, and the many ways she kept family and friends connected throughout her life.

Claire is survived by her two siblings, Maurice Mercier and his wife, Lorraine, of South Carolina, and Rachelle Larue; as well as several nieces and nephews, including Robin Eaton of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and many beloved cousins and extended family members.

She was predeceased by her husband, Burton B. Finigan; her sister, Pauline Fontaine; her brother, Robert Mercier; and her stepmother, Laura (St. Germaine) Mercier.

In accordance with Claire's wishes, cremation will take place. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, August 29, at 12:00 noon at Sacred Heart Church, 187 Hopedale Street, Hopedale, Massachusetts. There will be no visiting hours.

A private committal service for Claire's cremains will be held at Pocasset Hill Cemetery in Tiverton, Rhode Island, at the convenience of the family.
