Carmen Martinez

Our beloved Carmen Martinez peacefully passed away on August 24, 2022, at the age of 65, surrounded by her loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a one of a kind daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother who was there unconditionally.

She was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois in 1957, where she enjoyed wonderful memories with her four siblings growing up with her parents - from walking to school with her siblings to meeting her youngest little brother at the corner of their block where he would give her a ride home on his bicycle. Carmen is the oldest of 5 children, she cared and set an example for her brothers and sisters: Dionisio, Cristina, Rosa and Antonio. All remembered her as an inspiration when growing up and her parents always loved how she took care of them while alive.

After her parents retired and relocated to Mexico, she developed a deep love for the arts. Her oil paintings were renowned in the community and her talent secured her an admission to the University of Guanajuato Architecture School - becoming the first person to ever be admitted to such a prestigious university from her town and first-generation graduate. In 1980, she met her future husband, Emilio Torres, during their educational pursuit and she graduated with both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Architecture specializing in Historic Preservation. She became a well respected urban development & public works state supervisor and faculty member of the National Institute of Anthropology & History of Guanajuato. Notable contributions include the restoration of the Palacio Legislativo (Courthouse), House-Museum of Dr. Mora, Palacio Municipal and an adaptive reuse of the Museo Iconografico del Quijote of the City of Guanajuato. 

While raising a family with her husband Emilio, she focused on raising her son and daughter, Daniel Emilio and Carmen Andrea, by providing them with a well-rounded sensibility in science and performing arts, maintaining family principles at the forefront. Inspiration and leading by example was her method of choice to move our family forward regardless of the circumstances. She was loving and nurtured our passions and aspirations as if they were her own - allowing our imagination free. 

Carmen returned to the United States and settled in San Antonio, Texas to start a venture in banking and provide a brighter future for her family. She enjoyed working with executive clients by providing excellent service offering primarily in Wealth Management and Finance, as licensed associate and with top financial institutions in the United States. At the pinnacle, she reached to be accepted as principal, which was her aspiration for many years, but unfortunately could not pursue opportunity due to illness. She was an active member of the St. Anthony Claret Catholic Church, keeping in mind the formation and love for education. As such, she contributed by developing religious values of love, charity and honesty for future generations through her catechism classes. She provided a glimmer of hope in their lives that brought great joy to her.

She had many friends and was a well-loved member of the community in Guanajuato, Mexico and San Antonio, Texas. She will be remembered in our thoughts for her values. Always at the forefront her love for God, her family and the respect to work based on ethics, responsibility and honesty. She is survived by husband Emilio Torres, daughter Carmen Torres with son-in-law Deepak Bhatia, and son Daniel Torres with daughter-in-law Milagros Chavez Valdivia and granddaughter Ximena Valentina Torres.

Nuestra querida Carmen Martinez pasó a mejor vida en Agosto 24, 2022, a la edad de 65 años, rodeada de sus seres queridos después de su difícil batalla con el cáncer. Era una maravillosa hija, hermana, esposa, madre y abuelita que siempre estaba ahí incondicionalmente.

Ella nació y creció en Chicago, Illinois en 1957, donde disfruto hermosas memorias con sus cuatro hermanos creciendo al lado de sus papás, así como caminar a la escuela con sus hermanos e ir juntos y cuidar de su hermano menor en la esquina de su cuadra para regresar a la casa en su bicicleta. Carmen es la mayor de hermana mayor de la familia, siendo el ejemplo a seguir para Dionisio, Cristina, Rosa y Antonio. Todos ellos recuerdan que fue un ejemplo a seguir y sus padres siempre apreciaron como cuidaba de todos ellos con delicadeza y cariño. 

Después de que sus padres se retiraran y decidieran vivir en México, ella desarrolló su amor por las artes. Sus pinturas de óleo fueron reconocidas por la comunidad y su talento ayudó a asegurar admisión a la Universidad de Guanajuato en la facultad de Arquitectura - siendo la primera persona de su comunidad de ser admitida en tan prestigiosa universidad y siendo primera de su generación en graduarse. En 1980, conoció a su futuro esposo, Emilio Torres, durante su carrera y se graduó de esta institución con su Licenciatura y Maestría de Arquitectura especializada en Preservación. Siendo una reconocida supervisora del estado de obras urbanas y públicas y profesora en el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia de Guanajuato. Sus más notables contribuciones incluyen la restauración del Palacio Legislativo, Casa-Museo de Dr. Mora, Palacio Municipal y reutilización del Museo Iconográfico del Quijote en la Ciudad de Guanajuato. 

Siempre teniendo presente el bienestar y educación de sus hijos, Daniel Emilio y Carmen Andrea, fomentando en ellos la sensibilidad a la ciencia y las artes manteniendo presente los valores familiares. Inspiración y predicar con ejemplo eran su método para sacar a nuestra familia adelante sin importar las circunstancias. Ella nos otorgaba mucho amor y cuidaba nuestras pasiones y aspiraciones como si fueran de ella - dejando libre nuestra imaginación. 

Carmen retomando su nuevo proyecto de vida en Estados Unidos, eligiendo la ciudad de San Antonio, Texas con su familia para reinventar una nueva profesión en finanzas y proveer un mejor futuro para nuestra familia. Trabajo con clientes ejecutivos bancarios proveyendo un excelente servicio primeramente en Gestión de Patrimonios y Finanzas, como una licenciada asociada y representando las mejores instituciones bancarias de Estados Unidos. En el pináculo de su carrera, ella fue aceptada como principal, que fue una aspiración de mucho años, que desafortunadamente no pudo aceptar por su enfermedad. Ella fue miembro muy activo de la iglesia de St. Anthony Claret Catholic Church, teniendo en cuenta la formación y apego a la educación. En sí fomentando los valores religiosos de amor, caridad y honestidad para las nuevas generaciones con sus clases de catecismo. Y dando así un grano de esperanza en sus vidas y gran alegría en la suya.  

Contaba con diversas amistades y era un respetable miembro amado de la comunidad en Guanajuato, México y San Antonio, Texas. Ella estará siempre presente en nuestros pensamientos por sus valores. Teniendo siempre presente su amor a Dios, a la familia y su respeto al trabajo basado en ética, responsabilidad y honestidad. Ella estará siempre presente por su esposo Emilio Torres, hija Carmen Andrea Torres con yerno Deepak Bhatia, y hijo Daniel Emilio Torres con hierna Milagros Chavez Valdivia y nieta Ximena Valentina Torres.
