Mrs. Claudette B. Hughes, (86), died in the comfort of her room in Whitney Place at Northbridge on February 22, 2021 from natural causes. Her beloved husband of 62 years was the late Lawrence J. Hughes.
Mrs. Hughes was the daughter of the late Claude and Beatrice (Senecal) Tousignant. She was born in Woonsocket, RI, moved to Manchaug, MA at a young age, and subsequently to Hopedale, MA where she spent 65 years. She graduated from Sutton High School in 1952.
Mrs. Hughes was employed by Milford Hospital as a Medical Transcriptionist for 30 years where she also served as the originator and President of the Activities Committee. The Committee sponsored trips and raffles as well as providing gifts to the hospital for use in patient care.
She was also active in advocating for seniors serving for many years on the Hopedale Council on Aging Board of Directors, serving at community luncheons, planning trips and other activities, participating in the Meals on Wheels program and volunteering her time at the Hopedale Friends of Elders Curiosity Shoppe.
She was a prolific knitter for family (everyone has their keepsake afghan) and organizations such as hospital NICUs and veterans shelters, and had a green thumb and keen eye for flower gardening.
After many family camping style vacations, she and her husband enjoyed broadening their travel horizons in the U.S. and abroad. Most of all, she enjoyed simply spending time with family, from children to great-grandchildren, who knew her as “Gramma” or “Memere”, in her beloved home on South Main Street in Hopedale. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by her daughter Kathleen Seaver and her husband Robert of Uxbridge, MA; daughter Patricia Hughes of Worcester, MA; son John Hughes and his wife Tammi of Chepachet, RI and daughter Karen Turgeon and her husband Peter of Uxbridge, MA; 5 grandchildren (Julia and Grace Turgeon; Caitlin Hughes; Jason and Jonathan Seaver) and 7 great-grandchildren (Milo, Julian and Hayden Seaver; Annaliese Ricard, Callum and Mason Borghi and Bryn, Emmett and Jack Seaver).
A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 187 Hopedale Street, Hopedale, MA on Tuesday March 2, 2021 at 10:00 AM. There are no calling hours. Social distancing protocols & use of face masks will be required for all facets of the funeral services.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Salmon VNA & Hospice, 37 Birch Street, Milford MA 01757; St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105 or a charity of your choice.
