Dr. Keith Sheffler Obituary

Dr. Keith Sheffler, 80, of Uxbridge, MA died June 30, 2022 of pneumonia at Milford Regional Medical Center.  He was the loving husband of Kathleen Brown Sheffler.

Keith was born in Gary, Indiana and always considered the Midwest home.  He grew up in Pennsylvania and New Jersey before attending Lehigh University, where he earned a BS and a PhD in materials engineering.  During his career in the aerospace industry, he worked for TRW and Pratt & Whitney and consulted for NASA on the space shuttle.  He holds numerous patents for the materials he designed to make air travel safer and less expensive.

Keith was passionate about science and things that moved.  From cars (convertibles were his favorites) to planes, to rockets, to boats, he loved them all and took pains to understand how they, and the universe itself, worked.  In his earlier life, his happiest times were on his boats.  A lifetime member of the Wethersfield Cove Yacht Club, Keith served in a number of positions there, including Commodore during the great flood of ’84.  When boating became more difficult, he shifted to land travel in RVs, both rented and owned. A favorite destination, among many, was Alaska, to which he returned numerous times. He and Kathleen loved to go on cruises and motor home trips. The two traveled extensively to five continents and every state in the United States. In his final years, the two spent several summers camping in Bourne, MA. Engraved on his camper was his favorite quote from Tolkien, his favorite and most often reread author:  All who wander are not lost.

Keith was predeceased by his wife, Lois Duke Sheffler of Wethersfield, CT, his parents, and two sisters, Barbara June Sheffler and Carol Sheffler McCormack of NJ and PA, respectively.  He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Browne Sheffler, loving daughter and son, Dr. Cheryl Sheffler Rubenstein of Annapolis, MD and Dr. William Sheffler of Seattle, WA, and by four grandchildren: Lily G Rubenstein and Audrey L Rubenstein, of Annapolis and Jonah and Judah Sheffler of Seattle.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at 5 PM at Edwards Memorial Funeral Home in Milford, MA.  All are invited to attend.
