Mr. James J. Yates, 97, of West Roxbury MA died Wednesday (December 20, 2023) at the German Centre in West Roxbury after a period of declining health. He was the beloved husband of the late Maureen (Fitzpatrick) Yates, who died in 2009.
Jim was born in West Roxbury, the son of the late John Yates and the late Rosemary (Logue) Yates, and lived there his entire life. He attended Roslindale High School and received his high school equivalency upon returning from wartime service which he had entered when he was 17 years of age.
Jim was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard where he served in the North Atlantic from 1943 to 1946. During his wartime service, he was a gunner’s mate on two Coast Guard Cutters: The USCGC Northland and USCGC Duane.
Following his military service, Jim was first employed as an iron worker working on several large commercial building projects in Boston and New York City. He then became a police officer and served in the Boston Police Department for 33 years until his retirement. In his later years, he served as a security officer at the Ritz Carlton Condominiums located in Boston’s Back Bay.
Jim was no stranger to work, constantly keeping up the various properties that he owned and maintained, and he also loved visiting the beach and the mountains. Jim was known for his kindness and generosity of spirit – always being available to family members and to his friends and neighbors. He was known for bringing freshly baked rolls and bread to all of the family gatherings and to extended friends/neighbors in West Roxbury, West Falmouth on Cape Cod, and South Newbury in New Hampshire. He was a devoted father and grandfather, spending time in his later years on the Cape and New Hampshire with his sons and grandchildren. Jim was also an avid reader during his life enjoying both military and western fiction. In his last few years, you could always find Jim either watching a western movie or keeping up with the news on TV.
Jim is survived by his three sons: James M. Yates and his wife Julie Canfield of Roslindale MA; William A. Yates and his partner Betty Nguyen of Westford MA; and Paul A. Yates and his wife Erin Yates of Plainfield NH; his four grandchildren: Aidan Yates, Sebastian Yates, Paul Yates, and Rachel Yates; he is also survived by his brother John Yates, and his wife Barbara Yates of Boxford MA, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Jim was the brother of the late Nancy Carroll and the late Claire McLaughlin.
His funeral will be held Wednesday (January 3rd) at 11:00 am from the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress Street, Milford MA followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 pm (Noon) in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 19 Winter Street, Milford MA. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Milford MA. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday (January 2nd) from 5pm to 7pm at the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home.
