Virginia Potty Obituary

Virginia Irene (Hughes) Potty, 92, passed away peacefully in her home of 70+ years in Hopedale where she lived with her youngest daughter Mary C. Potty.   Her beloved husband of 49 years was the late Joseph Clifford Potty.

Virginia was born in Whitinsville, MA, the only child of Ward and Celia Hughes.   She graduated from Northbridge High School, Class of 1947, and went on to hairdresser school.

Virginia was a successful hairdresser for over 30 years operating a salon from her home for many of those years while raising her family.  After that she worked as a receptionist at Motorola for over ten years before retiring.

During retirement she always remained active as a member and volunteer of the Council on Aging in Hopedale as well as a long term parishioner of the Sacred Heart Parish of Hopedale serving as a Eucharistic minister.  She enjoyed cruises, visiting the White Mountains, reading and most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family who knew her as “Grandma Ginny” or “GG”.

She is survived by five children and their spouses: Eli J. Potty and Deborah Potty of Hopedale, Michael J. Potty and Karen Kenter-Potty of Norton, Joseph N. Potty and Tracy Ronan of Medfield, Mary C. Potty of Hopedale and Jeffery A. Potty and Dorothy Barr-Potty of Medway.  She had seven grandchildren:  Melisa Kinkela, Jason Potty, Craig Hodgdon, Marc Hodgdon, Aaron Kenter, Matthew Potty and Jared Potty; as well as three great grandchildren Luke Kinkela, Evie Kinkela and Rosalind Kenter.   She is pre-deceased by her daughter Deborah Gibbons who passed in 2013.

Due to the COVID-19 gathering restrictions and her family’s concern for the wellbeing of family members & friends a Private Funeral will be held Monday (April 12th) from the Edwards Memorial Funeral Home, 44 Congress Street, Milford MA.
