Dr. Awilda Vega-DeJesus

            Dr. Awilda Vega-DeJesus, 64, of Guayama, Puerto Rico died Thursday (November 24, 2016) at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston MA after an illness. She was the beloved wife of Benjamin DeJesus Ortiz.

            Dr. Vega-DeJesus was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico the daughter of the late Carmen Gloria Cotto Ortega and the daughter of Ceferino Vega of Caguas, Puerto Rico. After graduation from high school she attained her bachelors of education degree; a masters degree in psychology; a masters degree in Spanish; a Phd. in theology & christian counseling; and also was a certified chaplain.

            Dr. Vegas-DeJesus worked as an educator for thirty years in all levels of education. She helped to start the Bridges Program in CT which involved transition services & adult educational programs which aided Hispanic children & families in reaching the appropriate education level according to state side standards.

Dr. Vega-DeJesus also worked as an educator in the prison system in Bridgeport CT and most recently had worked as a chaplain in Guayama PR. She was a sought out leader on the body of chaplaincy. She mentored sixty chaplains and was about to help eighteen more graduate this coming December. She was Vice President of the Chaplain Corps in Puerto Rico.

Dr. Vega-DeJesus is survived by her beloved husband of 27 years, Benjamin DeJesus Ortiz of Guayama PR; her father & step-mother: Ceferino Vega & Andrea “DiDi” Vega of Caguas PR; her younger sister & brothers: Gloria Vega, Jose David “Compi” Vega, Alex Vega and Eric Vega; her children & step-children; her many, many grandchildren; nieces & nephews & large extended family.

Funeral services will be held in Guayama, Puerto Rico under the direction of the Funeraria Valle del Sur located in Guayama, Puerto Rico.
